A Kubrick Odyssey

Film Nerd Designs
A Kubrick Odyssey
Decided to veer a little off the pro-wrestling path and post some designs of mine that celebrate the life and work of the greatest filmmaker who ever lived (in my opinion but name me on better), Stanley Kubrick. The design up top juxtaposes Kubrick with filmmaker Spike Jonze, whose most recent film (Her) won the 2013 Academy Award for best original screenplay. I love Jonez's films and often draw similarities between his and Kubrick's work. For example, both men produce films that have  incredibly distinct and nearly always unique tones. More often I feel their movies than just see them. Both filmmakers take worlds and ideas that are completely foreign to us and present them in a manner that feels and looks familiar. At the same time they both excel at presenting normalcy as fantasy.

The below shirts are less "designs" on my part and more attempts to showcase Kubrick's classic visiual style. It's difficult to pause one of Stanley's films and not see an image that is provocative in some way. He was the master of composing ever shot with style and purpose. In addition to the way he shot his films, Kubrick also had much to do with the marketing and distribution of his work as well. There are stories where Kubrick would call theaters and ask to speak with the projectionist to ensure he or she was playing the film to Stanley's specifications. The 2001 shirt showcases what is probably my favorite of all of Kubrick's movie poster designs, because it eximplifies the film's tone and style in a way that creates interst for the movie. I had the shirts made a few months back and can't wear them without receiving all kinds of complements.

So what do you think, cool designs? Are you a Kubrick fan, and if so, what films of his do you like the most? If you're not familiar with Kubrick's work there is a great documentary called, A Life In Pictures that reviews Stanley's life and career. Another fun doc to check out is the 2013 release, Room 237, which takes a look at the deeper meaning of The Shinning

If you're interested in getting one of these for yourself just email me and I'll give you all the sizing and pricing info.

Classic Pro-Wrestling 8x10 Designs Vol. 1

 Classic Pro-Wrestling 8x10 Designs Vol. 1
BOCKWINKEL MANTELL & RACE

Hello again wrestling fans! Bert's Shirts here with a new line of designs for the classic wrestling fan in all of us. This line of vintage style 8x10s celebrates the territory days of pro-wrestling; featuring stars from all walks of the NWA. As you can see the first volume of designs features AWA champ Nick Bockwinkel, legendary wrestler/ manager/ booker Dutch Mantell and the toughest man in wrestling history Harley Race. Future lines will feature wrestlers from WCCW, Stampede, Mid-South and WCW just to name a few.

I really like these designs on t-shirts as they fall into the growing trend of shirts that feature simple designs, typically of vintage photos. You can see bellow that I paired each design with a colored shirt that best represents the featured wrestler. In addition to being just a cool shirt, these are great for the wrestling fan that makes his or her way to pro-wrestling conventions. Its cool to get an autograph from any wrestling legend but imagine the look on their face if they saw you step up rocking an original design of themselves, that not even they have seen! The piece would go from a cool t-shirt to a one of a kind memorabilia.

I’d love to hear what legends and territories you’d like to see featured in future lines and what you think of this one. Thanks for reading and shoot me an email to get information on pricing and sizing for prints and shirts.

WWE Bryan Running Knee!

WWE COMIC Vol. 1
Daniel Bryan Running Knee

Here is the first of what will hopefully be many WWE 'comic book' style renderings. It would be difficult to argue that Daniel Bryan isn't the hottest star in Pro-Wrestling at the moment, so it’s a no brainer as to why I chose The American Dragon as my first superstar to draw. I wanted to marry his signature Running Knee with more animated gestures so I looked to my friendly neighborhood Spider-Man for inspiration.

As always if you're interested in getting a print of this piece (canvas, t-shirt, poster sign) email me for details. Be sure to let me know what you think and which WWE Superstar, Diva or Legend you’d like to see animated next!

Sea World Jurassic Park Mash Up Design

The Sea World Jurassic Park Mash Up Design

This is one of the most popular designs I've created. By that I mean I've received a lot of love and hate on social media form both sides of the passionate argument this design takes a side of. I've even caught a handful of people who have re-posted the design without giving me any credit, but I suppose I should be flattered.

Although this design does make me snicker and I'm happy to have produced something people are excited about, I want to make it clear that this shirt is an isolated satirical look at Sea World and has no associations of any kind with the film Blackfish.

If you are interested in having this design put on a t-shirt to raise money for the The Life Force charity, please email me
